What the palace complex includes

Topkapı Palace is a large historic complex on Sarayburnu, a headland that was once the site of the Eastern Roman acropolis. Sultan Mehmed II had the palace built between 1460 and 1478, following the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul; it became a museum on 3 April 1924.

Three large gates—Bâb-ı Hümâyun, Demir Kapısı and Otluk Kapısı—mark the complex, alongside five service gates known as koltuk kapısı. The palace also includes Kubbealtı, or the Divan-ı Hümâyûn, where the Council of State convened, and the Council of State Treasury.

Courtyards and key collections

The courtyards connect the palace’s gates and historic buildings, including Kubbealtı and the Council of State Treasury. The wider historic area also includes the Istanbul Archaeology Museums; you can combine the palace visit with a separate look at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums.

Gülhane Park provides an outdoor stop alongside the palace. Its paths and access can help you plan that part of the day.

A visit to Gülhane Park can pair time outdoors with the palace visit.

The combined ticket covers Topkapı Palace, Hagia Irene (Aya İrini) and the Harem, and is valid for one day from its purchase date. The separately sold Harem and Hagia Irene tickets provide alternatives if you are visiting those sections individually.

  • Combined ticket: 500 TL for domestic visitors, 2,750 TL for foreign visitors and 250 TL at the discounted rate.
  • Harem ticket: 400 TL for domestic visitors, 1,050 TL for foreign visitors and 150 TL at the discounted rate.

The ticket office is open 09:00–17:00; these are ticket-office hours, not stated opening and closing times for visitor areas. The palace is closed on Tuesdays. The National Palaces authority gives the first day of Ramadan Bayram and New Year as closures; the second and third days of Ramadan Bayram are open.

Visitors aged 0–6 are admitted free to the palaces, kiosks, pavilions, museums and historical factories covered by the National Palaces authority. Discounted tickets are available to students aged 7–25 who present a student ID; foreign students pay twice the discounted-ticket price.

Foreign students aged 12–25 are asked to show a physical International Student Identity Card (ISIC). Museum Card is not valid for the Topkapı Palace Harem or Hagia Irene sections.

Entry to sites covered by the National Palaces authority is prohibited with a weapon, including for law-enforcement personnel. Ticket prices, entry rules and schedules can change, so check the official site before you go.

How much time to allow

How much time to allow

Set aside enough time to visit the palace and any separately ticketed sections you plan to enter. The combined ticket is valid for one day from purchase, so you can use it for Topkapı Palace, Hagia Irene and the Harem within that validity period.

For a day that also includes the surrounding historic sights, you could pair the palace with the Istanbul Archaeology Museums or Gülhane Park. A one-day Sultanahmet itinerary from Sirkeci brings those area-planning choices together.

How do you approach Topkapı Palace from Sirkeci and Gülhane?

Topkapı Palace is at Cankurtaran Mahallesi, Sultanahmet/Fatih, in the historic area beside Sirkeci. Gülhane station is about a 3-minute walk from Viva Deluxe Hotel.

If you are planning a wider day in the district, pair the palace with Gülhane Park or the museums rather than treating each stop as a separate outing.
